The Denver Afterschool Alliance recently completed a comprehensive evaluation of how the systems-level services have helped sites improve in quality and increase their capacity to serve youth. Most saliently, we found that a majority of individuals, sites, and organizations fall onto a three year process we labeled the “observe, prove, discover trajectory” of data-driven practices. This trajectory has been instrumental for increasing the capacity of Denver’s afterschool provider community to use data. This workshop will allow participants to assess where they lie on this trajectory and make a plan for addressing gaps in their systems and areas where their capacity to use data can be increased.

After participants determine their current stage of data use, the presenters will facilitate a workshop around robust data-driven decision-making processes by modeling the following four critical steps: 1) generating buy-in through goal setting, 2) unlocking the power of multiple data sources, 3) analyzing data as a team, and 4) employing an interim measurement strategy.

We conclude with a discussion around how these processes support the continuous quality improvement efforts and help move staff towards seeing data as a tool for deep learning and improvement. By focusing on the participatory aspects of data usage, this workshop is intended to serve multiple audiences. Program and organizational leaders will walk away with easy-to-use tools that will help them evaluate the performance of their services, while intermediary and coordinating entity staff will be able to assess the gaps in their continuous quality improvement systems.
